![]() ![]() But the Mac Pro GPU will be powerful with up to 76 cores.- Mark Gurman January 26, 2023 Right now Apple Silicon Macs don’t support external GPUs and you have to use whatever configuration you buy on Apple’s website. The next Mac Pro may lack user upgradeable GPUs in addition to non-upgradeable RAM. Cross suggests that the Mac Pro may be to blame for the Mac Studio hold up (the Mac Studio still has an M1 Pro and M1 Max, while the M2 Pro and Max are already available for the MacBook Pro). As Macworld’s Jason Cross asked: Why does the Mac Pro even need to exist? Not only is the Mac Pro a niche product, geared for a high-end user-base, it also seems to be holding up the development of other desktop Macs–the iMac and Mac Studio. However there are some who are wondering if Apple has given up on the Mac Pro. We discuss the processor options in more detail below. Gurman clarified in January 2023 that the “high-end configuration of the Mac Pro, a model with 48 CPU cores and 152 graphics cores, has been canceled,” with Apple instead focusing on an M2 Ultra version of the machine. ![]() Gurman suggests that as the result of the “complexity and cost” of producing a Mac with this specification Apple has “likely scrapped that higher-end configuration”. Gurman believes this relates to issues Apple has encountered with it’s ultimate chip combination, that would have seen the most expensive Mac Pro model feature 48 CPU cores and 152 graphics cores. The reason for the extreme delay in unveiling the Mac Pro, according to Gurman in December 2022, is “changes to the company’s chip and manufacturing plans”. This wouldn’t be the first time Apple unveiled a new Mac Pro at WWDC months before it goes on sale (see the Mac Pro 2013 and the Mac Pro 2019, both of which were shown off at WWDC but not available to buy until December ). The Mac Pro may make an appearance at WWDC, but it may not be ready to go on sale until later in the year. This could indicate that both the Mac Pro and the Mac Studio could soon be updated. The reason he believes these are desktop Macs is that these Macs have the “left behind” notification disabled–since desktops tend to stay put. Developer Nicolas Álvarez spotted the references to the following unknown Macs: Mac14,8 Mac14,13 and Mac14,14. But Gurman may be being too pessimistic: Also in April, three new desktop Macs has been spotted in Apple’s Find My app, one of which could be the new Mac Pro. However, we may all be disappointed: back in April Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said on The MacRumors Show that he doesn’t think the Mac Pro will be revealed at WWDC in June. As WWDC approaches, with Apple’s developers conference set to begin on June 5, hopes are high that Apple could unveil the new Mac Pro during the keynote that opens the event. ![]()
